A 2 Percent Drop in Hydration

The UK has launched a health initiative to get folks to drink more water.

I normally knock back about 4 pints a day (8 large glasses) - a habit I've built up over the last 20 years.

In the summer it has become a bit of a standing joke that as soon as the temperature rises my brain goes on holiday - I become dippy with a capital "D"

I struggle to remember things and it gets particularly embarassing when I start to talk and then forget what I am talking about.

Someone mentioned to me that a 2 percent drop in hydration causes your brain to slow down - ie memory, concentration etc. That is such a tiny percent to make such a difference.

So, I started to drink more water - I've added another 2 pints to my daily count (4 large glasses) and the difference is incredible. I can concentrate more, my skin looks great ie plumper and glowing and I've stopped wanting to pick at food (we often confuse thirst with hunger).

I buy bottled water because it tastes cleaner than tap water and I always check the bottle to make sure it says "bottled at source" - which means it hasn't been transported off to some big water plant to be processed with chemicals. When it is bottled at source it means exactly that - it comes out of the earth and they put it straight into bottles without "fiddling with it."

So I think I have now cured my "summertime brain fog!"

Excellent! I know I feel horrible when I'm just starting to feel dehydrated. As my son often says...once you feel thirsty...you're already dehydrated. Drink often so you never actually feel that thirsty feeling.

I must admit when I first started drinking water it was hard work - I felt like I permanently walking around making sloshing noises and always seemed to be peeing!!

Over the years it has become a habit and I feel odd if I don't have a pint of water in my eye line. Winter is a bit harder as we tend to reach for drinks that warm us up - I sometimes add a dash of juice to make it a bit more appealing.
